PHARMACY SUBJECTS 1ST YEAR
1. Perspective in Pharmacy
- This subject is not a board subject. However, the whole essence of this course is to prepare and introduce students to the practice and regulation of the pharmacy profession. It tackles the history of pharmacy and the most prominent person that contributes to the profession. Aside from that it also helps students to establish basic knowledge of the different types of medicines being dispensed in the pharmacy.
2. Pharmaceutical Calculations and Techniques
- This course prepares the students for the basics of various calculations and techniques applied in the pharmacy profession. This subject is the foundation of most of the courses in the later years of study in pharmacy education, especially those courses that involve calculation. For instance, physical pharmacy, dispensing, dosage and drug delivery, QC, etc. This subject deals with topics such as calculating weights and measurements.
3. Pharmaceutical Botany with Taxonomy
- Are you curious about how plants work and how they are one of the natural sources of medicine? Well, lucky for you! This course deals with plant morphology, anatomy, and taxonomies. It focuses on the importance of plants as a source of active materials as applied in the pharmaceutical industry.
4. Pharmaceutical Inorganic Chemistry (with Qualitative Analysis)
- Do you love chemistry? Well, you'll ace this subject! As the name implies, this course focuses on how elements, compounds, and minerals are used in the pharmaceutical field. For instance, how magnesium is used as a laxative or iron as a hematinic. All throughout the course, you'll be studying both essential and non-essential elements, their preparation, tests for identification, quality, purity, and therapeutic uses.
5. Pharmaceutical Analysis 1 (Quantitative Pharmaceutical Chemistry)
- A branch of practical chemistry that deals with identification, determination, quantification, and purification. This will help pharmacy students learn how to do assays to determine the purity and quality of drugs, chemical constituents, and medicinal agents. Additionally, this subject involves calculations too.
6. Introduction to Pharmacy Administration, Management, and Leadership
- You might probably see many drug stores in your area, such as one of the most notable ones are Watsons, CVS Pharmacy, Southstar Drug, etc. Well, this course equipped you with the knowledge of the business and management side of things in the pharmaceutical field particularly in a community pharmacy setting. The subject orients students the basic supervisory functions perform by pharmacy managers. Throughout the course, you'll study the aspects of management, administration, and leadership in the pharmacy practice.
7. Human Physiology and Pathophysiology
- Pharmacy is a pre-medicine program, in this case, it is essential that pharmacy students must be well-equipped with the knowledge of how the human body works because this will be helpful in the study of pharmacology, pharmacokinetics, and pharmacodynamics. In this course, students are going to study the two areas of study in life. Wherein, students are taught how the human body parts function and how the human body functions in health and diseases.
8. Introduction to Healthcare System
- This subject is kind of similar to Perspective in Pharmacy, the only difference is that this course will orient students on how pharmacy involves and functions in the healthcare system. In this course, you will be dealing with how healthcare and pharmacy services are delivered in the community both rural and urban areas. Moreover, students will also learn about different healthcare-social issues.
9. Pharmaceutical Organic Chemistry
- Another field of chemistry! If you're a chemistry enthusiast you will also ace this subject well! This course is the study of the structures (you might probably have seen those hexagonal chemical structures) properties, compositions, the reactions of particularly the carbon and hydrogen-containing compounds. The difference between this subject from inorganic chemistry is that this is one of the most challenging and difficult chemistry subjects in the 1st year BS Pharmacy curriculum.
